Kit houses

Many homes in Canada are built from a kit and they offer a very reasonable and often quite environmentally sound way of building. Usually, most of the building is done in a factory and the parts are then assembled onsite. This means that wastage is minimised and the building goes up very quickly. Most companies allow you to customise their stock plans so you can tailor the design to your individual needs. It also means that you don't need to hire an expensive architecht, and most of the interior fittings come included as well. The only problem with this option for us is that you pretty much need all your budget up front to pay for the foundations, the kit, the labour etc. We probably won't be able to get a mortgage for some time as we will be self employed. Our aim is to build in stages after intially sinking the equity from our UK house into hopefully building the basic shell.
